About Mala

Known for her “beauty of tone, admirable legato, radiant stage presence” (-Revue L’Opéra) and “deep musical maturity” (-The Post and Courier), Israeli-Belgian mezzo-soprano Mala Weissberg has performed roles including Angelina (La Cenerentola), Hänsel (Hänsel und Gretel), Prince Orlofsky (Die Fledermaus), Fernando (Vivaldi’s Motezuma), Le Prince Charmant (Cendrillon), Ino (Semele), Miles (The Turn of the Screw), Human (Plaything, North American premiere), Cendrillon (Cendrillon), Dorabella (Così fan tutte), Miss Todd (Old Maid and the Thief), Autumn (Service Provider), Bride (AVOW), and Dritte Knabe (Die Zauberflöte).

Upcoming engagements include her Oper Köln debut in the title role of Moritz in Max und Moritz by Gisle Kverndokk, Lisea in Vivaldi’s Arsilda, Regina di Ponto with Opera Neo in San Diego, participation as an Emerging Artist at the prestigious International Meistersinger Akademie, Stephano in Roméo et Juliette with Park City Opera in Utah, and a soloist appearance in Pergolesi’s Stabat Mater.

Mala is a recipient of numerous awards, including the title of “Musical Prodigy” from the State of Israel, Laureate of the 2026 Concours International d’Art Lyrique de Namur, Finalist of the 2025 Concours International de Chant Baroque de Froville, Award Winner and Semi-Finalist of the Cesti Baroque Competition, Award Winner from the Career Bridges Foundation, Excellence Scholarship Award from the Schulich School of Music, Finalist in the Wirth Vocal Prize Competition, First Prize in the Westminster Voice Competition, and recipient of America-Israel Cultural Foundation and Keren Ronen scholarships.

Mala was a member of the Westminster Choir, where she was featured as a soloist in Talbot’s Path of Miracles and Brahms’ Liebeslieder Walzer. She has performed at the Spoleto Festival USA (2019 & 2022), Carnegie Hall, and the Kimmel Center under the direction of Yannick Nézet-Séguin, and has toured North America and Asia with the choir.

A lover of early music and concert repertoire, Mala has been invited as a guest soloist in a Young Baroque concert at the prestigious Innsbrucker Festwochen der Alten Musik, one of Europe’s leading early music festivals. She has also appeared as a soloist in an International Women’s Day concert with Association Femme d'Europe in Brussels and in the baroque concert Love, Beauty and Death in Venice with Tafelmusik in Toronto. Additional appearances include soloist engagements with the Young Israeli Philharmonic, participation as a Young Artist at the Mishkenot Sha'ananim program, and performances on Kol HaMusica live radio broadcasts from Jerusalem. Her concert repertoire includes Beethoven’s Scottish Songs, Ravel’s Chansons Madécasses, Brahms’ Zwei Gesänge, and Frank Bridge’s Three Songs for Mezzo-Soprano, Viola and Piano.

Summer engagements include Opera Neo in San Diego, Lachine International Vocal Academy, OperaFest Sewanee, Opera5 in Toronto, The CoOPERAtive program, Opera Viva! in Verona, and more.

Mala has participated in public masterclasses and private lessons with leading artists in the field, including Joan Dornemann, Matthew Polenzani, Andreas Scholl, Helmut Deutsch, Pierre Vallet, Wolfgang Holzmair, Kiera Duffy, Liz Upchurch, François LeRoux, James Vaughan, Warren Jones, Chen Reiss, and others.

She earned her Bachelor’s degree from Westminster Choir College, where she studied with Laura Brooks Rice, and her Master’s degree from The Schulich School of Music at McGill University, where she studied with Prof. Matthew Treviño.

In her free time, Mala enjoys playing the violin and guitar, as well as hiking, cooking, painting, and caring for dogs and other animals.
